Plant Installation: Pittsboro Elementary School - Before And After

Pittsboro Elementary School - Before and After

We recently installed some bushes and mulch at Pittsboro Elementary School -- just in time for the new school year to begin! They wanted to spruce up the front sign before parents and students started dropping by for open house.

This wasn't a complete landscaping overall by a long shot, but you'd be surprised what a big difference it makes by simply added a handful of bushes and fresh, brown mulch.

We're confident that the sign in front of Pittsboro Elementary School is now just a little more welcoming with this plant installation. Although the kids might not agree!

Tips For Early Spring

Spring is almost here!

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer and it's time to start thinking about thinking about growing a thick, lush lawn.

There might still be a chill in the air, but it's not too soon to begin giving your lawn the love attention it deserves after a long winter. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
  • Fertilization: Spring is a critical time to fertilize your lawn. Proper fertilization replenishes the food reserves your yard draws from while dormant in the winter and fuels rapid growth phase. This will produce a thick, healthy lawn that also helps prevent weeds.
  • Weed Control: Go ahead and apply a pre-emergent weed killer on lawns now to prevent grassy weeds from germinating later this Summer. Maintaining a proper mowing height and fertilization will prevent spring broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clovers and plantains.
  • Pest Control: Proper cultural care is important in helping your lawn recover from stress related winter diseases. Properly timed fertilizer application and mowing at the recommended height for your grass type are two items that will aid in the recovery of your lawn.
  • Mowing: Setting your mower at a very low height can actually increase weeds by exposing the soil surface to sunlight and removing stored nutrients in leaf blades. Cool weather grasses, such as bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues, should maintain a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches. Warm season grasses, like bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine and centipede, should be kept at 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall.

Quick Pruning Tips

It's time to prune, y'all!

Late winter and early spring are the perfect time to begin pruning in many regions. Here are some tips and a list of common shrubs and trees to prune in late winter or early spring.
  • Prune on a mild, dry day.
  • Prune out dead and diseased branches.
  • Increase light and air at the crown of the tree by removing the overgrown and smaller branches.
  • Keep the branches that develop or maintain the structure of the tree.
  • Cut branches at the point at which one branch or twig attaches to another.
